Choosing a format

The six formats and when to use each one.

Single Elimination

If you lose a match, you are out. This format is quick and good when you have little time.

Double Elimination

You are only out after your second loss. One bad match does not end your tournament, but it takes longer.

How Double Elimination works →

Round Robin

Everyone plays against everyone, and the most points win. This is very fair and suits smaller groups.

Swiss System

Nobody is out. In each round, you meet someone with a similar score. This is good for many players and little time.

Group + Knockout

Players first play in groups, and the best of each group move on to a knockout stage. Many football tournaments work this way.

Multi-Event

Everyone takes part in every event, and the points are added up. This is good for a sports day or a decathlon.
