The Swiss System explained

Nobody is out, and you always meet someone with a similar score.

How it works

Everyone plays in every round, and nobody is out. After each round, the app pairs players with a similar number of points. Strong players soon meet strong players.

How many rounds you need

You need far fewer rounds than in Round Robin. “Auto” picks a number that suits your group:

  • 8 players: 3 rounds.
  • 16 players: 4 rounds.
  • 32 players: 5 rounds.

You can also choose the number yourself. The app warns you if you choose so many rounds that players would have to meet again.

Who wins

The player with the most points wins. When points are equal, Buchholz decides first, then the number of wins, then the other rules. With an odd number of players, one player gets a bye in each round, which counts as a win.

What Buchholz means →

Running it in Tourneydo

  1. Tap “New Tournament” and choose “Swiss System”.
  2. Add at least 3 players, then tap “Generate Tournament” and “Start Tournament”.
  3. Enter all results of the round.
  4. Tap “Generate Round 2” to get the next matches. Repeat this for each round.
  5. After the last round, tap “Finish Tournament”.

When this format fits

  • You have many players and limited time.
  • Everyone should play the same number of rounds, as in chess or board games.
