Group + Knockout explained
First a group stage, then a knockout stage, as at many football tournaments.
How it works
Players are split into groups, and everyone in a group plays each other. The best of each group move on. From then on, a loss means you are out.
Groups and who moves on
- āGroup Sizeā: 3 to 8 players per group. The default is 4.
- āAdvance per Groupā: how many players move on. The default is 2.
- If your players do not divide evenly, groups differ in size. The app warns you, because not everyone then plays the same number of matches.
Starting the knockout stage
When the group matches are finished, tap āGenerate Playoff Bracketā. After that, group results can no longer change. In the bracket, 1A means the winner of group A, and 2B means the runner-up of group B.
An example
16 players in 4 groups of 4 play 24 group matches. If 2 players move on from each group, 7 knockout matches follow. That makes 31 matches in total.
When this format fits
- Everyone should play several matches, even if they lose early.
- You still want an exciting knockout stage and a final.
