Single Elimination explained

How a knockout tournament works and when to use it.

How it works

Two players meet, and the winner moves on. The loser is out. This goes on round by round until the final decides who wins.

Score once, next round is ready

Enter a score and the next round is already waiting. Nobody has to seed the final by hand.

How many matches you need

Every match removes one player. So 8 players need 7 matches, and 16 players need 15 matches. A match for third place adds one more.

When the number of players does not fit

The tree of matches fits exactly with 4, 8, 16, or 32 players. With other numbers, some players get a bye. A bye means they reach the next round without playing.

When this format fits

  • You have little time or many players.
  • You want an exciting final.
  • It is less fair than other formats, because one bad match ends the tournament for a player.
